Deeks et Kensi sont interloqués quand Hoffman leur dit ne pas savoir où se trouve Astrid, sa propre fille. En fait elle s’est pointée un matin chez lui en disant que sa mère venait de mourir, et qu’elle lui avait donné son adresse. Il avait reconnu le nom de la maman. Ils n’étaient que des gosses quand elle était tombée enceinte. Il lui avait promis de trouver une solution…et s’était enfui. Pas son meilleur souvenir. C’est pour ça qu’il n’avait pas pu renvoyer Astrid. Il lui avait dit qu’il n’était pas certain d’être son père : elle l’avait regardé de ses grands yeux qui vous mettent à nu – alors il lui avait donné une chambre. Kensi est choquée de ce qu’elle entend. Mais Hoffman, conscient de ses erreurs et de ses faiblesses, est sincère sur un point : l’inquiétude de savoir Astrid seule quand il sera en prison. Kensi se lève brusquement et sort de la salle. Elle tente de refouler ses larmes, de retrouver son calme dans la pièce adjacente ;

KENSI: OK. C’est moi qui commence. Demande-moi ce que tu veux.

ASTRID: t’es amoureuse de ton équipier?

Kensi a un blanc…

KENSI: t’as quel âge?

ASTRID: 18 ans, 3 mois, 12 jours, six heures et 32 secondes. 33. 34...

ASTRID: Oui.

Hetty sourit.

L’écran devient noir.

HETTY: Vous vous sentez en veine?

[Three men are sitting at a table in a diner; one is young, one in middle age and one older; they don’t speak much; a 4th man enters]

YOUNG: Hey. You think this could be him?

MIDDLE: I wasn't expecting Scrooge McDuck.

OLD: Well, we're about to find out.

[The man in suit comes closer to their table]

MAN: Echo-1?

YOUNG: That's us. You...the guy?

MAN: Not me. I guess we all got the invite.

[Middle age man chuckles]

MIDDLE:  Anyone else waiting for the punch line? Rich guy, college brat, geriatric and construction worker walk into a diner.

[Young chuckles – the waiter stops near the man in suit]

WAITER: Some coffee for you, sir?

MAN: Voss, Badoit or Pellegrino.

WAITER: Pelle... Pelle-what? Uh, no hablo español.

MAN: Sparkling water. With the bubbles.

WAITER: Okay.

[Middle age man laughs]

MAN: I'm curious. I suspect the man who invited us here must be quite important.

OLD: Well, assuming it's a man. We've never met him. Or her.

MIDDLE: Got no updates on the Twitter account.

YOUNG: Hey, snap a pic while we wait.

MAN: I don't want my face on some blog.

OLD: Why? Do you have something to hide?

MAN: I like my privacy.

[But middle age man has already risen up his phone]

MIDDLE: Come on. Everybody say "bubbles."

[He chuckles]

OLD: Bubbles.

[The man checks the photo]

MIDDLE: Moneybags looks good on camera.

OLD: Preserved for posterity.

[The young guy looks around: nobody is behind the bar and the whole diner is empty]

YOUNG: Wh-What is this? Where did everyone go?

OLD: Isn't that odd?

[Middle age man heads to the back – the kitchen is clear, too much clear!]

MIDDLE: Hello? Hello? The hell is going on? And why did we all get invited here?

[And the diner is blown out…]

[NCIS office. ♫ At the gym : Kensi and Callen have sticks in the hands and are training ; Sam is watching them]

SAM: Not bad, Kensi. Not bad.

CALLEN: Better than your partner.

SAM: Speaking of which...

KENSI: Deeks is running late. He ate some bad sushi last night, so it made him sick.

CALLEN: Bad sushi?

KENSI: Mm-hmm.

[Sam and G exchange a look and a smile]

KENSI: What?

CALLEN: You know we invented the "bad sushi" move, right?

SAM: Which means we don't fall for the "bad sushi" move -ever.

KENSI: Okay. He went to Vegas. He drove back last night.

[Callen assaults her; she hits him back, they grunt]

CALLEN: And he didn't invite you?

KENSI: No, because I had plans.

CALLEN: Plans?

SAM: Plaaans? If you lie, we'll know.

[Kensi sighs]

KENSI: John Hughes marathon with my mom.

CALLEN: Wow. That you should have lied about.

SAM: He must've taken that model.

KENSI: She's a fitness model, not a fashion model, which means she doesn't even model actual clothes.

CALLEN: So what does she model?

[Sam laughs]

KENSI: Energy drinks and fake tattoos. You actually think he took her?

[They fight again; (grunting); Kensi loses her stick and groans when G blocks her neck. Deeks appears]

DEEKS: I'm, uh...I'm really sorry that I'm late. I just... I had some bad sushi last night. I mean, it was so hard to get out of bed this morning. And why are you doing this?

[Kensi is trying to stop him speaking]

KENSI: Because they know.

DEEKS: They know?

[He chuckles]

DEEKS: Okay. The only way they could know is if a certain person who watched Pretty in Pink for the 98th time last night ratted her partner out. We agreed on the "bad sushi" move, partner.

KENSI: Well, it turns out they invented the "bad sushi" move.

CALLEN: That's right.

[He throws his stick to Deeks]

DEEKS: Really? And, uh...Wow, what is...what is this?

SAM: Sayoc.

[He takes Kensi’s stick]

SAM: Stick grappling. Yeah. Close-quarter combat.

DEEKS: Oh, I see. So, what's the plan here? You gonna go a little Bruce Lee on me,'cause you do remember that I carry a... a weapon, right?

SAM: The most common weapons are blunt objects.

DEEKS: Oh.

SAM: Sticks, pipes, bats. Things like that.

DEEKS: Oh, I see, I see.

[They’re face to face but Deeks looks distracted]

DEEKS: Hey, Hetty!

[And he strikes by surprise. But he isn’t fast enough, Sam hits his stick, it falls down and the cop is chocked out; he grunts]

DEEKS: Aah! Ha, ha! Uh, uncle! El tío! El tío! Uncleway! Uncleway! Huh? What'd you say? What'd you say? El tí...

[He grunts; G’s phone rings. Sam stops grabbing his victim who falls down on the floor, hands on his throat]

SAM: You dropping the pig latin on me?

CALLEN: Fun's over!

DEEKS: Yeah, 'cause you know what? Nothing says fun like getting choked out with a stick.

[OPS center. As soon as G, Sam, Kensi and Deeks come in, Eric starts his briefing]

ERIC: Four bodies pulled from the remains of the Winer n' Diner in Pasadena.

SAM: That place was closed last year.

ERIC: Well, someone reopened it without telling the landlord. Safe to say there won't be any Yelp reviews written in the near future.

NELL: We pulled the photo of the dead men from the user's cloud account. It was taken before the diner was leveled by RZX plastic explosive.

SAM: Rigged by pros. Controlled detonation.

DEEKS: All right, so who are these guys and who'd they piss off?

NELL: Well, it was an eclectic group. We have a millionaire, a college kid, a grandfather and a man licensed to drive a bulldozer. We're still searching for common enemies.

CALLEN: All right. Let's start with connections.

NELL: Well, all four victims followed a Twitter account linked to the Office of Naval Intelligence.

ERIC: And that's what got them killed. Computer logs show that each victim received an invitation to the diner from this particular account.

KENSI: So either the Navy staged a Twitter ambush or their account was hacked.

DEEKS: Okay, is anybody else wondering why the Office of Naval Intelligence is on Twitter in the first place?

ERIC: Operation: Wide Awake. It's an experimental project that uses social media to reach its participants. It's designed as a... strategy game. Naval Intelligence was recruiting high-IQ individuals to test the integrity of the project.

SAM: Why??

NELL: That's the part we don't know. Operation: Wide Awake is currently classified.

CALLEN: So all the victims were players?

[Hetty is just entering]

HETTY: Not merely players, Mr. Callen. They were the elite of the project. Naval Intelligence referred to them as Group Echo-1. The man behind the project has been authorized to brief you both.

CALLEN: We'll let you know what we find.

[He and Sam leave the OPS…]

[And enter the Naval Intelligence laboratory building, where the metal detector beeps but they show their badges and get free access]

CALLEN: Thank you, gentlemen.

[They walk with a man in a hallway]

MAN: I only just found out about the attack. I don't understand who'd want to do this. The group wasn't even supposed to know each other.

CALLEN: You don't have any idea who could access your Twitter account to stage the ambush?

MAN: Your guess is as good as mine. Despite all the protocols in place, we got hacked. Tried to trace it, but hit a dead end.

SAM: What is Operation: Wide Awake exactly?

[They stop into a room where people are working on computers; data are summarized on a large screen]

MAN: On the surface, Wide Awake looks like an online strategy game, but in fact, it's potentially the most advanced technology we have for predicting terrorist threats. Think of all the different ways someone could attack this country. Using Wide Awake could tell us which one it's most likely to be.

CALLEN: The Pentagon already does that with threat matrix software.

MAN: Computers predict logical outcomes, Agent Callen, but we humans are not always logical. Wide Awake allows us to account for both.

SAM: How?

MAN: Crowd sourcing. The way thousands of people play this game enables us to predict the most likely course a small group or even a lone individual might choose in predicting a threat.

CALLEN: So, what can you tell us about the players that died this morning?

MAN: Group Echo-1 was my elite sample group. Best of the best. The brightest individuals in the crowd tell us the most, but they're also the most difficult to find.

SAM: And without them?

MAN: I'll have to start from scratch. It'll... set Wide Awake back years. People that gifted don't just turn up every day, but...

CALLEN: But what?

MAN: There weren't... four members of the group. There were five.

[Sam and G exchange a look]

SAM: So one of them's still out there.

MAN: It seems so. Here's the details he filled out for Wide Awake.

SAM: Mike Hoffman. Residential address: San Pedro.

CALLEN: Kensi and Deeks are closer.

[He steps away to call them]

MAN: Hoffman didn't show up at the diner. Does that make him a target or a suspect, Agent Hanna?

[Sam nods without answering]

[Kensi’s car. She stops in a parking lot]

DEEKS: So, uh, tell me. Did the, uh, ride over here strike you as somewhat tense with long, uncomfortable silences?

[She looks at him with contempt]

DEEKS: Kind of like this? This about Vegas?

KENSI: I had other things to do, okay? Non-Deeks things. Plus, I'm totally over Vegas.

DEEKS: You've never been to Vegas.

KENSI: Exactly. Because I'm over it.

DEEKS: Okay, technically, you can't be over a place you've never been to. Doesn't matter. Here's the deal. We're going together. You and me.

KENSI: No.

DEEKS: Yeah. Look at me. It's happening.

KENSI: No, it isn't.

DEEKS: Vegas. Vegas.

[They get out, walk towards the building]

DEEKS: All right, I get it. You're afraid you wouldn't be able to keep up with me in Vegas.

KENSI: Oh, I could keep up with you.

DEEKS: Not even close.

KENSI: I'd bury you.

DEEKS: Okay, so prove it. Me, you, Vegas.

KENSI: Okay. You're on. Bring it, Beach Boy.

DEEKS: You know what they say. What, uh, happens in Vegas...

KENSI: Will leave you curled up in a little fetal position begging for mercy.

DEEKS: Promise?

[They are at the bottom of the stairs]

KENSI: So, Hoffman lives on the third floor. Outstanding arrest warrants-- check fraud, possession of counterfeit currency, misdemeanor assault.

DEEKS: But, supposedly, he's got an IQ higher than both of us?

KENSI: Yeah.

[A girl is currently running down the stairs; she bumps into Kensi and rushes outside]

DEEKS: Ooh.

KENSI: Watch it!

DEEKS: Probably a sale on skinny jeans someplace.

KENSI: What?

DEEKS: 'Cause she's a hipster.

KENSI: She was emo.

DEEKS: Mmm. I will bet you Eric's horn-rimmed glasses that that girl was a hipster.

KENSI: Is there even a difference?

DEEKS: Yeah. Of course there's a difference-- they got the... the hair with the colors and the tight...I have no idea. Is there a difference?

KENSI: You sound seriously uncool right now.

[She laughs]

DEEKS: Whatever. Either way, she was a cutie.

KENSI: Oh, my gosh, she looked like she was 15.

DEEKS: No, I didn't mean that kind of cute. Wait a minute, how do you know that she wasn't 18, huh? Maybe... maybe she was just petite.

KENSI: Maybe your brain is petite.

[He chuckles]

DEEKS: Touché!

[They’ve reached the 3rd floor]

DEEKS: Kens?

[Deeks shows blood on the wall.]

DEEKS: Hey.

[There’s blood on Kensi’s jacket]

KENSI: The girl.

DEEKS: I got the apartment.

KENSI: Yep.

[She’s already running down the stairs. She spots the girl jumping over railway tracks.]

[Deeks carefully goes to Hoffman’s door – there’s more blood on the wall. He opens the door: a man (bloody wound on top of his head) is lying on the ground]

[Kensi stops behind the chain-link fence and raises her gun]

KENSI: Federal agent! Stop!

[The girl stops and stares at Kensi; the agent lowers her gun; they’re kind of face to face, soul to soul…A train approaches-Kensi gets scared, looks at it but the girl slowly steps back- the train horn blares – Kensi watches anxiously the whole train moves away – The girl has vanished;   Kensi is touched… ]

                       ----------------------- ZAPPING -------------------------

[Hoffman’s apartment]

DEEKS: Manic Pixie Dream Girl?

[Kensi sighs]

KENSI: Slipped away.

[He looks astonished]

KENSI: For now. You check that laptop?

DEEKS: I'm going to have it bagged for Eric, let him do the honors. So, we got no wallet, no I.D. and obviously a hell of a struggle.

KENSI: That's fatal head trauma. Bad fall would do it. Right there. Slammed his head on the edge of the coffee table.

DEEKS: Or she could've slammed it for him.

KENSI: He's twice her size. If anything, she was in survival mode.

DEEKS: Running from the scene and leaving a trail of blood makes her look pretty guilty.

[Kensi’s camera shutter clicks: she takes a pic of the man’s face]

KENSI: We don't know anything about her.

DEEKS: Exactly.

[G and Sam are just coming in]

CALLEN: You've been busy.

DEEKS: Yeah.

SAM: This Hoffman?

KENSI: No, sir. This is Hoffman.

[She shows Hoffman’s ID]

KENSI: We're still waiting on the I.D. for the body.

CALLEN: Hoffman didn't get hit at the diner like the rest of them. Maybe this guy was sent to finish the job.

SAM: Holster, no gun.

[Kensi heads to the kitchen: on the fridge, there’s a pic of Hoffman and the running girl, and many drawings signed Astrid]

DEEKS: Manic Pixie Dream Girl must've taken it. She had a small backpack.

CALLEN: "Manic Pixie Dream Girl"?

KENSI: I think her name is Astrid. And she clearly knew Hoffman.

[Callen’s phone rings: Eric is calling]

CALLEN: Yeah, Eric?

[OPS center. Eric and Nell are in front of their computers]

ERIC: All right, still waiting for an I.D. on your body. Hoffman's cell phone's been switched off. No signal, no trail.

[Hoffman’s apartment]

CALLEN: Does Hoffman have any family?

[OPS center.]

ERIC: Negative. Everything we've got indicates he's a loner.

NELL: Speaking of social connections, I just got the results from a deeper round of profiling on the diner victims. This morning was the first time any of them met.

[Hoffman’s apartment]

SAM: Dr. Mathers' story checks out. The group didn't know each other.

CALLEN: So, besides Operation: Wide Awake, the doctor was their only link.

SAM: Which means he could be a target, too.

CALLEN: [To Deeks] Send us any updates on Hoffman and the girl.

[He goes out with Sam]

DEEKS: Done.

[In front of the fridge, Kensi is lost in her thoughts]

KENSI: Where did you go?

[She feels Deeks’look in her back and turns round]

[Lab; Mathers is watching pics on Callen’s phone]

MATHERS: I'm sorry, I don't recognize any of them. All of Wide Awake's communication was conducted online. They were just names on a screen.

CALLEN: Which is why none of them met in person till this morning.

SAM: Who else knew about Wide Awake?

MATHERS: The only people who ever saw the whole program were those skilled enough to play through every one of its levels: Group Echo-1.

SAM: And now the only ones with that knowledge are you and Hoffman.

MATHERS: Yeah.

[Callen notices something in the guy’s tone]

CALLEN: There's someone else.

MATHERS: I've been getting... help from a friend on the outside. A Pentagon analyst named George Toretto. I wanted to see how it was doing against the best threat matrix in the world.

CALLEN: So you asked him to compare your results against the Pentagon's classified threat intelligence.

SAM: You broke security protocols to beta-test your program.

CALLEN: And in doing so, not only compromised your entire project but four innocent people were killed.

MATHERS: I never thought anyone would get hurt, Agent Callen. My research is designed to save lives. Do you realize what's at stake? If Wide Awake goes operational, it will make our country a safer place.

SAM: What did Toretto tell you?

MATHERS: Well, that's... the problem. He never gave me the results.

SAM: We're going to increase security at this lab. If you contact Toretto, the two of you will end up sharing a cell.

MATHERS: Am I in danger, Agent Hanna?

[G and Sam exchange a look]

SAM: Not if you stay put.

[They walk to the exit]

CALLEN: I'll get Eric to pull everything he can on this guy, Toretto.

[They hear the alarm beeping and look at the lab entrance through the window: Astrid wants to come in but the security guys stop her]

GUARD1: Stop. Stop. You can't go in there with your bag.

GUARD2: We got to check it.

[Sam and G start banging at the window]

CALLEN: Hey! Hey!

[The girl hears the noise, kicks one of the guard where it hurts (he grunts) and runs outside –Sam and G run too but]

CALLEN: Stop that girl! Stop that girl!

[ The alarm beeps when they get the exit; in the streets they watch around: Astrid has vanished. ]

SAM: She came here for a reason.

CALLEN: Looks like Wide Awake isn't as big a secret as Dr. Mathers thinks.

[NCIS office. Nell is coming downstairs from the OP to brief Kensi and Deeks at their desks]

NELL: So, security team at the Naval Intelligence Lab says Astrid tried to slip through a metal detector and triggered the alarm.

DEEKS: Maybe the gun she stole off the dead guy was in her backpack.

KENSI: Or maybe she's a girl who was never briefed on security protocol--she saw the alarms, men trying to detain her, and she ran.

DEEKS: [doubtfully] Maybe.

KENSI: What else do we know about her?

NELL: Neighbors said they started seeing Hoffman and Astrid together a few months ago, but they kept to themselves. She had her own room in Hoffman's apartment, but we found no personal items, just some clothes.

KENSI: Sounds like a girl on the run.

DEEKS: Okay, so why do you run to a military facility?

KENSI: Looking for someone-- a friend, maybe?

[Eric joins them]

ERIC: Hey. Hoffman's laptop. Searched the e-mail archives, but the entire account's been wiped by a pro.

KENSI: Anything else on the computer?

ERIC: The most recent version of the Wide Awake gaming application.

DEEKS: Now we're talking.

[Sam’s car]

CALLEN: Nell uploaded the file on Dr. Mathers' Pentagon buddy, George Toretto. Red flag in his bank accounts. $100,000 deposited five days ago. All cash, no paper trail.

SAM: Wide Awake's technology predicts attacks on America before they happen. There's plenty of well-funded groups that would like to see it fail.

CALLEN: Not to mention rogue governments.

SAM: Maybe someone's paying Toretto to sabotage the program.

[They exchange a look]

SAM: This is the building.

[Tires squealing, a car is leaving the place in a hurry]

CALLEN: You got to be kidding me. That's our guy. That's Toretto.

SAM: Something must have tipped them off.

[Another vehicle is chasing Toretto]

CALLEN: He's a popular guy.

[Sam turns over and the agents run behind the 2 cars tires squealing ♫]

SAM: Going to crash.

CALLEN: Please don't.

SAM: Not us. Him.

[A big truck comes from the right; Toretto manages to avoid it but the car behind has no choice: truck's horn blares, the tires squeal while the guy tries to stop but he crashes. Sam stops in time; the agents rush off, Callen runs behind Toretto’s car and Sam checks the crashed car. Callen hear tires squealing, Toretto is already far away. Sam joins his partner]

SAM: Driver's dead. Toretto?

CALLEN: Gone.

                          ----------------------- ZAPPING -------------------------

[NCIS office. Agents desks. Nell is briefing Kensi and Deeks when G and Sam are back]

NELL: We I.D.'d the body found at Hoffman's apartment. Max Naylor. He did time at Folsom Prison with the driver who was killed in the car crash. Uh, he also has experience in demolitions, which explains the diner. Both were guns for hire.

CALLEN: Well, if someone hired them to sabotage Wide Awake, Hoffman would be the next logical target.

SAM: Unless he was the one behind this. Hoffman and Dr. Mathers are the only ones left who understand how this technology works.

DEEKS: Well, then Mathers might want to step up the security at his lab.

SAM: It's already done. Nell, confirm his location.

NELL: On it.

[She leaves them]

KENSI: What about Toretto? The $100K in his account had to come from somewhere.

DEEKS: Well, Toretto's got the financial connections; Hoffman's got the insider knowledge. Maybe they were partners. Hoffman got greedy, took out a hit.

SAM: Doesn't explain the dead guy in Hoffman's apartment.

CALLEN: Maybe Toretto tried to get to Hoffman first.

KENSI: Or the guy was there to kill Astrid. She showed up at the Naval Intelligence Lab, which means she knows something about Wide Awake.

[Erin is running down the stairs]

ERIC: Hoffman's cell phone was just switched on. I got the signal.

[They all hurry upstairs]

[OPS center.]

ERIC: Hoffman's at a bus stop on Pico Boulevard in West L.A.

CALLEN: The signal means we can get remote access. Does the phone have a front-facing camera?

ERIC: Roger that.

CALLEN: Call it. Grab an image of the person that answers.

[Tablet beeps]

ERIC: Got it.

CALLEN: That's not Hoffman.

[Astrid’s face has popped up]

ASTRID: [over phone) Hello?

ERIC: She disconnected the call.

KENSI: Call her back.

DEEKS: Wait a minute, what's the plan here? I mean, what are you going to say to her? "If you're not killing everybody involved in a top secret governmental program, maybe you can come over and watch Pretty in Pink, we can eat some Oreos"?

KENSI: This might be the only chance we get, and I think I can get her to talk to me.

DEEKS: Why?

KENSI: Because she's scared.

[Hetty joins them]

HETTY: You've found the girl?

KENSI: Yes. Astrid is on the run and she knows about Operation Wide Awake. We have a chance to talk to her.

HETTY: But Mr. Deeks believes your emotions are clouding your judgment.

DEEKS: Well, that's a little harsh, but...yeah.

[Kensi looks pissed off]

HETTY: Call the girl, Mr. Beale. Maybe she'll see in you what you see in her, Miss Blye.

ERIC: All right, I got Astrid on a traffic cam at that intersection.

[Footage on screen shows Astrid waiting for a bus- the line rings]

ASTRID: Hello?

KENSI: Hi, Astrid. My name is Kensi. I was at your apartment building today. I'm so sorry if I scared you.

ASTRID: You didn't scare me.

KENSI: Well, I know you've had a hard time today. I thought you might like to talk.

ASTRID: I don't.

KENSI: Well, then maybe you need a friend?

ASTRID: You don't really know me.

KENSI: No, I don't, but I'd very much like to. Why don't you start by telling me something about yourself.

ASTRID: You're tracing this call.

KENSI: Okay... let's start with me, then. Um...I'm single...and totally over Vegas.  I love Pretty in Pink and Oreos.

ASTRID: No one's trying to hurt me; they're trying to hurt Mike.

KENSI: And where is Mike right now?

ASTRID: He's enjoying the art of civilized bushwhacking. I have to go now.

KENSI: No, no...Astrid...

ERIC: Phone's been turned off. No signal to track.

SAM: By the time we get there, she'll be long gone.

CALLEN: Anyone understand what she was talking about?

HETTY: The "art of civilized bushwhacking" is an old term for the game of poker. Don't ask me how I know that.

[She walks out]

SAM: Eric, pull up Hoffman's finances.

[Tablet beeping – accounts are on screen]

SAM: He's made seven withdrawals from the Hollywood Park Casino ATM in the past month.

CALLEN: Sounds like a guy with a gambling problem to me.

SAM: Sounds like a motive.

CALLEN: Eric, bring up the security cameras at the Hollywood Park Casino. Maybe he's still there.

[They all go downstairs; Hetty is signing a form for a guy; Deeks stops near her]

HETTY: Done.

GUY: Thank you.

HETTY: Mr. Deeks.

DEEKS: Hey, um...you knew that putting Kensi on the phone with Astrid was the right call.

HETTY: And you want to know how I knew that.

DEEKS: If you don't think that I need to know, then...

HETTY: No, no, no. After her father died, she, uh, ran away. She lived on the streets for almost a year.

DEEKS: I didn't know that.

HETTY: And I, Mr. Deeks, didn't tell you.

DEEKS: 'Course not.

[He leaves her; Nell wants to go up]

HETTY: Miss Jones. With me.

NELL: Okay.

[They go to Hetty’s office and the boss shows her seat: she wants Nell sitting in it]

NELL: But that's your seat.

HETTY: Indeed.

[Nell laughs]

NELL: Okay, this is a test, right? You're looking to see my response?

HETTY: This is a chair, Miss Jones. Sit in it.

NELL: Fair enough.

[She obeys]

NELL: Wow. Yeah, it's, uh...it's really... oh, it's comfortable.

HETTY: I've been told that you have a very high IQ. Higher, in fact, than any other person currently employed by NCIS.

NELL: Well, it's just a number with a range of variables prone to cultural bias, so...

HETTY: Prove it.

[She opens her laptop; the game appears on screen]

NELL: You want me to play Operation: Wide Awake?

HETTY: Those four men at the diner were killed because of something they discovered with this program. I need you to find out what that was.

NELL: All right.

[She starts tapping on the keyboard]

[Hollywood Park Casino. G, Sam, Kensi and Deeks cross the room]

MAN: [over speakers]: ...Texas hold 'em tournament this Friday. Players may register at the members' service desk or online.

[There’s not enough room for everyone, they hit slightly women playing at a table]

CALLEN: Excuse me.

SAM: Pardon me. Pardon me.

WOMAN1: Now, that's what I call two well-mannered young man.

WOMAN2: Someone certainly taught them well.

[They watch them waking away, Deeks and Kensi side by side]

WOMAN3: What a handsome couple they are.

WOMAN4: Where'd that brunette get those legs?

DEEKS: Just remember, boys, “you got to know when to hold 'em”.

[Kensi groans]

KENSI: You've been singing that stupid song the entire ride over here.

DEEKS: Mmm, okay, it's not a stupid song. That's "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers, aka the Silver Fox.

SAM: Ah, Charlie Rich was the Silver Fox.

DEEKS: I'm pretty sure it was Kenny Rogers.

CALLEN: It's Charlie Rich. Any luck, Eric?

[OPS center.]

ERIC: Jackpot. I got him at poker table number four. Striped short-sleeved shirt.

[Casino]

CALLEN: Kensi, Deeks...why don't you do your thing.

DEEKS: First date?

KENSI: Last date.

[Deeks groans]: Is this because I didn't take you to Vegas? Because we are in the casino now.

KENSI: Mmm... that's why I need to upgrade.

[She frees her hair]

DEEKS: Kensi? Kensi?

[She sits down at Hoffman’s side and groans]

KENSI: My friend hates it when I gamble.

HOFFMAN: Life's a gamble.

[Kensi laughs]

KENSI: No.

[Deeks stands behind her]

DEEKS: Fern? Fern. What-what are you doing here? Are you trying to make me jealous?

[Kensi clears her throat]

KENSI: See, he went to Vegas, and he thinks that this is gonna make up for it.

HOFFMAN: I'd never go anywhere without you. He's clearly playing way out of his league.

DEEKS: Okay, you know what I love? I love it when people talk about me like I'm not standing right behind them.

DEALER: And the fish hooks take it.

[Hoffman has won]

KENSI: So... are you just lucky, or are you really, really good?

HOFFMAN: I'm really, really good. But, uh... I'm looking to get lucky.

DEEKS: Okay.

[He laughs]

DEEKS: You know what? I love... I love a little butter with my cheese. I'm going to grab a soda.

HOFFMAN: Buy you a drink?

KENSI: Yeah. Shaggy won't stop bugging me if I stick around.

HOFFMAN: Then maybe...we should leave.

KENSI: Maybe we should.

[Hoffman is very happy – he gives a lot to the dealer and follows Kensi outside]

DEALER: Thank you, sir.

[Hoffman points at the parking lot]

HOFFMAN: my car is right there.

[Sam and G are waiting just at the door]

CALLEN: Genius-level IQ, huh?

[Hoffman sighs when he sees their badges]

HOFFMAN: Oh, crap.

SAM: Luck's run out, Hoffman.

HOFFMAN: I knew it was too good to be true. Figured my chances were 50-50.

[Deeks laughs and starts cuffing him; he stares at Kensi]

DEEKS: Just to be clear, I am, uh, totally in your league.

KENSI: In your dreams.

DEEKS: All the time, darling.

[A phone rings]

DEEKS: All the time.

CALLEN: What do you got, Eric?

[He looks pissed off]

CALLEN: Mathers is gone. Gave his protective detail the slip.

                           ----------------------- ZAPPING -------------------------

[Boatshed. Interrogation room. Kensi and Hoffman face to face at the table; Deeks standing at their side]

HOFFMAN: So, it was all an act? Even that whole "are you lucky or just good" bit?

KENSI: Act.

HOFFMAN: Ah. Well, I'm impressed.

DEEKS: The four other people in Echo-1 are dead.

[Hoffman looks puzzled]

KENSI: Operation: Wide Awake.

HOFFMAN: Yeah. Never heard of it.

[Deeks puts a laptop on the table]

HOFFMAN: Hey, that's my laptop.

DEEKS: Wow, nothing gets by this one.

KENSI: Mmm. Wide Awake application's installed on the hard drive. Why don't you play it for us? Let's see what you got.

[Hoffman sighs]

HOFFMAN: Well, if it doesn't involve...dice or cards, I'll probably need an instruction manual. Preferably one with pictures.

[He starts typing]

DEEKS: Okay, there is no way this is our fifth man.

HOFFMAN: This looks like one of the games Astrid likes to play.

DEEKS: Okay. Who exactly is Astrid?

[Hoffman sighs again]

HOFFMAN: I, uh...I don't know. I think she's my daughter.

KENSI: You think?

[He exhales]

HOFFMAN: She's different. She, uh, barely speaks. She's really good at math. She spends hours on this computer. I took her to the casino a few weeks back and taught her how to gamble. Astrid never loses. I mean, like... ever.

KENSI: The art of civilized bushwhacking.

HOFFMAN: Yeah, that's what we call poker. Hey, you... you talked to her? Where is she?

DEEKS: We were hoping you could help us find that out.

HOFFMAN: Well, I was on an 18-hour streak at the casino when you found me.

[Kensi disagrees]

HOFFMAN: Hey, I gave her my cell phone in case of an emergency. No, trust me, that girl knows how to take care of herself... She's okay, right?

[Deeks and Kensi have exchanged a look and go next door where Sam and G are speaking with Eric]

ERIC [over speaker]: Mathers still hasn't gone back to his office.

CALLEN: If Astrid was using Hoffman's laptop and e-mail, all of her Wide Awake activity would've looked like it was coming from him. Dr. Mathers would have had no way of knowing it was her.

[Sam sighs]

SAM: Maybe this girl has some form of autism. Asperger's syndrome.

KENSI: That would explain a lot.

ERIC: [Over video] Well, we'd need a formal diagnosis to be sure, but Astrid seems to fit the profile. Social awkwardness, limited empathy, a savant's gift for numbers.

DEEKS: Yeah, but clearly high-functioning enough to defend herself and evade us.

KENSI: Whoever wanted the rest of the team members dead still thinks that Hoffman's the target, not Astrid-- so as long as no one finds out, Astrid is safe.

CALLEN: And only two people had access to Hoffman's data: Dr. Mathers and Toretto.

SAM: Eric, send us Dr. Mathers' home address.

[Eric waves and vanishes from screen]

SAM: You two keep talking to Hoffman. If anyone can help us find Astrid, it's him.

KENSI: Okay.

[They go back in the interrogation room]

HOFFMAN: Anyone add up all those outstanding warrants I've got? I did. I figure I'm looking at five years in prison. That's if I'm lucky.

DEEKS: Well, I think we've pretty much established the only kind of luck that you have is bad.

HOFFMAN: Bad luck doesn't make you a bad guy.

KENSI: Just a bad father.

[Hoffman sighs]

HOFFMAN: Look, it all happened so fast. I-I never had the chance to get the hang of it. And it's too late to start now. Promise me that you'll make sure Astrid is okay when I get locked up.

KENSI: We're not cutting any deals.

[Deeks stares puzzlingly at her]

[NCIS office. Nell is still “playing” and it seems things are not getting well. The laptop beeps and she sighs. Hetty comes close]

HETTY: I hope you don't feel I'm putting pressure on you, Miss Jones.

NELL: Nope. Nope, I'm fine.

HETTY: Let me know when you're finished.

NELL: Mm-hmm. I'm...still... still working, so...Yeah, no, this is not going to happen. I'm... sorry. I... I thought I was doing something wrong, but this is not me. This is program. When you reach the final level, the engine used to predict the threats completely falls apart, which means...

HETTY: Operation: Wide Awake doesn't work.

NELL: Could it be that Dr. Mathers didn't know about this?

[Hetty sighs]

HETTY: Highly unlikely.

[Both nods]

NELL: Wow.

[Boatshed. Interrogation room]

DEEKS: Astrid-- how do we find her?

HOFFMAN: I don't know.

KENSI: How could you not know? She's your daughter?

HOFFMAN: She just showed up on my doorstep a few months back. She told me her mom died and left her my address. I recognized her mom's name, but...We were just kids when her mom got pregnant. I promised her we'd work something out, but...instead, I did a runner. Not my finest moment. So when Astrid told me who her mother was, I... I couldn't turn her away.

DEEKS: Because you felt guilty?

HOFFMAN: Look, I don't even know for sure that she's my daughter. And I told Astrid that. But she just...looked at me...with those big eyes. I mean, she just wore me down, you know? What can I say? So, um... I gave her a room and I let her stay.

KENSI: Did you ever take back what you said? About not being her father?

HOFFMAN: Listen...this isn't about me trying to cut a deal here. I know I have nothing to offer you.

[He stops; long sigh]

HOFFMAN: My life has been one big gamble with no payoff.

KENSI: Maybe Astrid's the payoff.

HOFFMAN: I blew that, too. I know I might not be...the best person for Astrid...but she still needs someone looking after her.

[Kensi stand up, opens the door and goes away. Deeks follows her. She has tears in the eyes]

KENSI: I'm fine.

DEEKS: I know. I'm just getting some water.

[He opens the refrigerator door, pulls out 2 bottles, puts one in front of Kensi and goes back to the interrogation room]

[G and Sam are at Mathers’house. They see someone through one of the windows]

CALLEN: Looks like Mathers is home…Or not. Someone broke in.

[Door is open]

SAM: Take the front. I'll cut him off from behind.

[Callen enters; Toretto is in, looking around]

CALLEN: Federal agent! Don't move, Toretto!

[The guy grabs a poker and starts running towards the back but barely had 2 steps]

SAM: You need to hear it twice?

TORETTO: You won't shoot me. I'm the only one that can give you answers.

SAM: No one's getting shot. See?

[He lowers his gun, puts it in his back]

SAM: Just relax. Now, put it down.

CALLEN: You try and get past him, you're going to wish I shot you.

[Toretto doesn’t believe this and tries to hit Sam with the poker – He’s soon shocked out by Sam’s arms]

SAM: When I tell Deeks about this, you better vouch for me.

CALLEN: You went Bruce Lee on his ass. I'll vouch for you.

TORETTO: Mathers is the one you want.

SAM: What are you doing here?

TORETTO: Look, he's trying to kill me. I came here to try and talk some sense into him. It's complicated.

[Toretto is panting]

SAM: Oh, yeah? Wide Awake doesn't work. Neither one of you knew till Mathers gave you his results to compare to the Pentagon's intel.

CALLEN: He paid you $100,000 to keep quiet. Mathers wanted the results to look successful.

SAM: And you taking that hush money means you'd get charged with treason if people found out, which is why you didn't go public when bodies started turning up today.

TORETTO: I wasn't the only one who knew Wide Awake was a failure. There was some guy in Mathers' test group who actually e-mailed him, tried to call him out on it.

CALLEN: Hoffman.

TORETTO: Yeah. Mathers never heard from him again. He got worried others in the group would figure it out.

SAM: So he lured them to the diner this morning.

TORETTO: I didn't think he was going to kill them. I thought he was going to try to buy them off. And then that guy came after me.

CALLEN: Where's Mathers now?

[Toretto is still panting]

TORETTO: I don't know.

[OPS center. Deeks and Kensi come in]

DEEKS: So, Callen and Sam have Toretto. Looks like Mathers offed his own test group.

ERIC: Good thing we just found him, then. My lovely assistant will take it from here.

NELL: Assistant?

ERIC: Uh, colleague. They can be lovely, too.

NELL: Mathers' cell's online. He just received a call from Hoffman's phone.

ERIC: Their call lasted 30 seconds; Hoffman's phone went dark immediately afterwards, but Mathers is still online. He's headed for the casino. That's Hoffman's stomping ground.

DEEKS: Okay, it stands to reason Astrid would go there looking for her father, but why reach out to Mathers?

NELL: Well, if she called him, then Mathers probably realized he's been hunting for the wrong person.

KENSI: If that's true, once he finds Astrid, he's going to kill her.

                   ----------------------- ZAPPING -------------------------

[Casino]

CALLEN: Astrid's too smart to let Mathers find her like this.

SAM: She couldn't get him at his lab, so she led him here.

KENSI: If Astrid still has the gun, I think she might use it.

DEEKS: To protect herself?

KENSI: To protect her dad.

[OPS center.]

ERIC: We got eyes on Mathers.

NELL: He's on the west side of the floor. Looks like he's headed towards the kitchen.

[Callen, Sam, Kensi and Deeks start the chase]

CALLEN: Moving in.

[They spot him heading outside]

CALLEN: Mathers! He's got a weapon!

[Mathers runs]

SAM: Mathers, drop your weapon. Drop it.

[The man is face to face with Astrid. He drops his weapon but…the girl is aiming at him]

CALLEN: [To Kensi] You got this?

KENSI: Yeah, I got this.

[She steps forwards; slowly]

KENSI: Astrid?

ASTRID: I told you, I don't have friends.

KENSI: Told you I wanted to be the first.

ASTRID: Prove it.

KENSI: That's kind of hard right now, don't you think?

ASTRID: Then you're not really my friend.

KENSI: Okay. Astrid, tell me what you want me to do. You tell me.

ASTRID: Leave me alone so I can shoot him.

KENSI: I know you're trying to protect your dad, but...I can't do that. I'm sorry. This is not something that you want to hear right now...but I will do everything in my power to stop you. Do you hear me?

ASTRID: This is what friendship looks like, isn't it?

KENSI: Yeah. It is.

[Astrid looks at the agents, ready to shoot]

KENSI: Please hand me the gun.

[Astrid hesitates]

KENSI: Please hand me the gun.

[Astrid obeys]

ASTRID: You really like Pretty in Pink and Oreos, or were you just saying that?

KENSI: I do like them.

ASTRID: It's weird.

KENSI: Okay. Hey, what do you say we get out of here?

[Sam is cuffing Mathers. Astrid follows Kensi, and Callen exchanges a look with Deeks]

[NCIS office. Deeks is coming back – He exhales, meets someone]

DEEKS: What's up, man?

MAN: Hey.

[He finds Sam and Callen at their desks]

DEEKS: Anybody seen, uh, Hetty?

CALLEN: Nope. Haven't seen her.

SAM:  Writing off your losses in Vegas as business expenses?

DEEKS: What? No. What do you take me for?

[Sam chuckles]

SAM: A guy who sneaks off to Vegas for Phantom of the Opera and has a secret love for musical theater. We always know where our teammates are, Deeks. Always.

DEEKS: Phantom of the what?

SAM: Opera.

DEEKS: I wouldn't know, see, 'cause I'm not into musical theater.

CALLEN: Nothing wrong with a good musical, Deeks.

DEEKS: Fair enough. You got me. Just do me a favor...

SAM: Oh, we won't tell Kensi!...How's Astrid?

DEEKS: The doctor diagnosed her with Asperger's syndrome. Says she can look after herself with a little bit of help.

SAM: Well, Hoffman's facing jail time, so the girl's on her own for now.

CALLEN: And she's a smart girl. I'm sure she'll figure it out.

[They start leaving the bullpen]

DEEKS: Oh, and just for the record, I also went and saw Andrew Dice Clay just to even it out.

SAM: Yeah, right.

[Boatshed. Astrid and Kensi are playing poker]

KENSI: Okay, two, please.

[She clears her throat]

KENSI: So, tell me about your mom.

ASTRID: She's dead.

KENSI: I know. What was she like, though?

[Astrid focused on the pawns]

KENSI: Okay. Let's start with me. You can ask me anything you like.

ASTRID: Are you in love with your partner?

KENSI: …How old are you?

ASTRID: 18 years, three months, 12 days, six hours and 32 seconds. 33. 34...

KENSI: Your dad was happy to see you.

ASTRID: Mike was happy, but he was sad, too. He tried to hide it from me, but I could tell.

KENSI: Why do you call him Mike if he's your dad?

ASTRID: That's his name.

KENSI: Are you sure he's your dad?

ASTRID: Yes. My mom told me that.

KENSI: But how do you know it's true?

[Astrid has a big sigh]

ASTRID: Are you sure that the man that you call Dad is your real dad, Kensi?

KENSI: Yeah.

ASTRID: How do you know that it's true?

[She puts her cards on the table: she has won…]

KENSI: Point taken.

ASTRID: Win the next hand...and I will answer any question that you ask me.

KENSI: I'm not going to win the next hand. Or any hand after that, for that matter.

[She inhales]

KENSI: I do really want to know more about you, though, Astrid.

[For the first time the young girl looks at Kensi]

ASTRID: I guess you'll have to keep me around, then.

[She smiles, Kensi smiles too - footsteps approach: Hetty is joining the play. Astrid looks at the cards]

HETTY: My name's Hetty Lange.

[Astrid hesitates… and distributes to three players; Hetty appreciates. The screen becomes dark]

HETTY: You feeling lucky?
